The definition of Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and ileum (the 3rd portion of the small intestine, between the jejunum and the cecum), associated with ulcers and fistulae (an abnormal or surgically made passage between a hollow or tubular organ and the body surface, or between two hollow or tubular organs). In layman terms the definition of Crohn’s Disease is best explained as The body’s immune system tries to cure the digestive tract, but the digestive tract does not really need curing because it is not sick. The tissue of the digestive tract then becomes inflamed. The inflammation starts to eat away at the lining of the digestive tract. Ulcers then form causing diarrhea and occasional bleeding. Nobody knows exactly what causes Crohn’s disease. The disease was discovered by Burrill Bernard Crohn, hence the name.

What is Crohn’s Disease – What Causes Crohn’s Disease?

What causes Crohns? The causes of Crohn’s disease are still not known. Diet and stress once were believed to be responsible for causing Crohn’s disease. But, we now know that these merely aggravate the disease, but they are not the cause of it. Researchers suggest that the crohn’s causes could be due to immune system malfunctions, genetics, or even environment may be factors that cause the disease. What is Crohn’s Disease – Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease

Symptoms of Chrons Disease
what are symptoms of Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s disease symptoms may vary over time and from person to person depending on what part of the gastrointestinal tract is inflamed.
Some of the symptoms of crohn’s disease and colitis include:
Frequent diarrhea, Rectal bleeding, Weight loss, Fever, Abdominal pain, Cramping, Fatigue, or Reduced appetite.

Crohn’s Diagnosis and Treatment: There is no single test that can diagnose Crohn’s, however it is a combination of information that doctors will use to determine the cause of symptoms. Physical examination, blood work, stool samples, and X-rays of G.I. tract are early tests and exams that can help determine diagnosis. An endoscopy can examine the colon and a biopsy can examine the tissue of the colon or affected area. The goal of treating Crohn’s is to reduce the inflammation that causes symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs, immune system suppressors, and antibiotics are standards-of-care; as well as anti-diarrheals, pain relievers, iron and calcium supplements, and vitamin B-12 shots. Nutrition therapy, involving a low-fiber diet, may also be used to compliment medications; this will reduce the size and number of bowel movements. Surgery is also an option; however the effect is usually temporary because the disease can occur near the reconnected tissue.

Crohn’s symptoms mean unusual changes in diet, weight, energy levels, and hygiene. People with Crohn’s disease often have pain in the stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss. Crohn’s can also cause skin rashes, arthritis, and swollen eyes. Crohn’s disease symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody if inflammation is severe), fever and weight loss.

More than 750,000 Americans suffer from Crohn’s disease. Prescription medications may give some patients relief, but so far there is no cure. As many as 1.4 million Americans live with Crohn’s disease or its cousin, ulcerative colitis, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers say they have identified the bacteria that causes inflammation in some patients, helping them close in on a cure.

Scientists have identified a bacteria called MAP – Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis – that could hold the key to a crohns disease cure. The new treatment of crohns called anti-MAP therapy, is currently in clinical trials. MAP has been known for a long time to be responsible for the symptoms of Crohn’s disease in cows, sheep and goats. But this is the first attempt to find a crohn’s disease cure for humans using anti-MAP. A blood test is used to identify the DNA of the MAP, allowing doctors to quickly diagnose or rule out Crohn’s Disease. Anti-MAP therapy consists of 3 antibiotics known to kill the MAP bacteria.
