Diamonds are forever, choose wisely: Here’s how

Choosing a Diamond

Where to begin when Choosing a Diamond

The first and most important thing to consider when Choosing a Diamond, is where you are getting the diamond.  Don’t just settle for a Diamond based on just what your first jewelry store has in stock.  With so many options to choose from, finding the perfect diamond that’s right for you can be overwhelming. Consider the following step-by-step guide for choosing a diamond. We put together this diamond guide to help you with your selection.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Choose a Diamond

  1. First, identify the diamond shape desired by the recipient. Currently round and princess cut are the two most popular diamond choices today.diamond-shapes
  2. Set budget and choose a carat weight minimum based on the price. If your significant other has their heart set on a one carat diamond, even a flawless half carat diamond won’t be a good fit.
  3. Begin making concessions in the following order until you arrive at one that fits your budget:

    • First, lower the Clarity. Go as low as VS2, because below VS2, you will begin seeing flaws with the with a jeweler eye loupe.
    • Next, lower the Color.  Below H you will begin loosing the whiteness of the diamond.
    • Finally, lower the Cut.  Go as low as Good in shape before making concessions in other areas.  A low quality Cut might affect the brilliance no matter the Clarity or Color.
    • A carat weight difference of 5% to 10% would be very difficult to detect visually.

  4. If after following the steps above, you are still outside your budget, either you should increase your budget or lower your standards:

    • First, Lower the Clarity to as low as SI1 which still wouldn’t be recognizable by the naked eye.
    • If your setting is made of yellow gold, you could pass with Color as low as K.
    • Finally, reduce the Cut. Go as low as Fair but the diamond might never shine properly unless the cut is correct.

  5. If you are still outside your budget, or personal preferences, you could possibly pick a setting to compensate for the lower quality diamond.  I have seen some small diamonds surrounding the large diamond, or some decorative settings compensate for a lower quality diamond.
